I think you can do the same thing as if she were going to give it to a cat shelter. If the money is given to her, then really it belongs to her, right? Of course, lawyers will always find a way to engage in a law suite - it means income for them. So probably outside of speaking with her regarding whatever needs you might have (and hopes), you might also have to buy her out. Who knows, maybe Opus Dei will want to buy the property from you - charge them extra and buy and even bigger place next door!

Otherwise, call the lawyers, and all of you can spend the 1/6th worth on several other people's incomes.

Good luck!

Interesting that the article itself is written by Rev. C. John McCloskey, a noted Opus Dei priest in Washington, DC.

Hi Jenny, numeraries spending time their families, attending family occasions and looking after their elderly has only been a recent development in Opus Dei. There are many many numeraries who have have not been able to attend their parents, siblings & grand parents funerals, not to mention weddings & baptisms. No it is not written that they should not attend but it is considered bad spirit to so 'attached' to your family and to spend the money to attend - no wonder numeraries soon become family outcasts with only the Opus Dei to turn to.
Very valid point re. who is running this blog - who are you and why are you doing this - it's just about like a covert Opus Dei operation .....Cheers, Toby

Hi Alan - sorry to be blunt but I need to, if you have been a member for 10 years (I'm guessing supernumery) and they let you go 'happily' it's because you didn't get it! They are keeping you good for your wife and who you know mate. Don't let your precious faith be contaminated! Toby

Dear Shaka:

"Ejaculations" is a poor translation in English-speaking countries of the more traditional expression: Ejaculatory prayers... an otherwise traditional practice in the Church. See here http://www.papastronsay.com/redemptorist_history_pg3.htm

Dear N. Norris:

What you can do? Your best bet is to have a talk with your sister, so that both sides can express their respective positions. Members are often confused in their understanding of loyalty to God and family.

They often confuse the former with Opus Dei (God's will is expressed through the prelate and the superiors), and the latter with Opus Dei (their "supernatural" family).

If conversation should fail, then a lawyer would best answer the question "what can we do legally?".

Good luck!

p.s. Readers are welcome to provide suggestions.

My sister is a numerary who has inherited a 1/6 portion of family lake property. We did not know she has willed everything to Opus Dei! What can We legally do to keep Opus Dei from owning part of our family property upon her death???

I found the Spanish version of the Catechism. I can read Spanish, but is there an English version that someone has translated?

ANSWER:

Not that we know of. Our experience in countries where Spanish is not the main language is that the person using the Catechism for instruction of other members uses the Spanish version.
